Assignment #3 Daylight

Now, I've been playing with daylight for the last 5 or so years. Having the opportunity to spend an afternoon looking at how daylight plays shaped on the building in the city is very exciting.  I took a walk on Wednesday and spent some time looking at the light.
Part 1
12pm facing north
 2pm, facing east
2:30pm, facing south east,
the angle creates a nice highlight
 2:45pm, facing south
the direct sunlight turns the buildings into silhouettes
 4:45pm facing east
the color temperature has warmed as the evening approaches
6:45pm, facing west
from earlier this month, minutes before sunset 8:15pm

Part 2 Make a Daylight Portrait:

I have been using a daylight studio on the top floor of a building on 17th street for the past 5 years.
the studio uses north facing, and 60 degree angles windows to give a traditional painters style light.  These 2 are portrait figure studies from a shoot this past weekend; 2 angles, and the bottom image is a film scan from a shoot from this summer where you can see a v-flat used as both a prop and fill reflector.

 silhouette into the light
light is coming from the upper left, and i used a black
to intensify the black edge on the right.
wider BTS shot of the shot above
The light is coming from above and down and the vflat is
reflecting a fill light on the back right edge of the model.

These last two are images from my portfolio which I feel are good examples of using daylight for a portrait.

Assignment 2 Lighting Laws

With the start of the second assignment we were hit with another curve ball.
The mirror  needed for the assignment was broken the day before and not replaced!
but after some running around and quick think on the group members part we were able to save the day!

We also wanted to test out one of the filters and made this!

The universe must be testing me with this course.  I can't wait to see what's thrown at me and my poor group members next!

Assignment #1: Inverse Square Law

Well, its that time of year again, and I find myself in a Graduate program at SVA.  I'll be posting my assignments for my Laws of Light class here as well as some fun images!
Jun and Phoelix setting up the grey card and measuring.

It took are group around 60 minutes to complete the main project.

16 ft.

Then the extra credit, and boy, that's when the fun started.  We started to set everything up and then the bulb blew.  After having to remove the burnt up Edison bulb remains from the lamp assembly, and testing the other bulb, I made the executive choice to run to CVS and buy new bulbs.  After 10 minutes of looking I found the only remaining non-LED bulbs in the store! It was an exorbitant $12!
But all in all we were able to shoot the extra credit and achieve the result below.

All in all a successful shoot, but we did end up finishing around 10pm.

More to come soon...
